The Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Chairman, Cllr. Jerome Verdier on behalf of the TRC, Government and people of Liberia, has offered apologies to victims of atrocities committed during the Liberian civil war saying, "we are sorry that it happened but thank God that we are all still alive".

Making the apology to the people of Lofa County after listening to horrifying accounts of atrocities committed in New Nekabozu, Lorma Passama, Kamattahun, Barkadu and Popalahun last week while on a nation wide tour, Chairman Verdier said their experiences from the war are not only limited to Lofa County, but to the entire country.

Cllr. Verdier however, assured the people of Lofa that the TRC would investigate complaints thoroughly so that justice and reconciliation can be done, adding, " the TRC will carry on the investigation and recommend to government who will decide on the next course of action".

He however urged the victims to liaise with the local TRC committee in the county to tell their stories and assured them of redress after the TRC process. "The Commission is about truth telling and reconciliation which is paramount to peace for a better Liberia".

The TRC boss also informed the people of Lofa that a visit by the entire Board of TRC Commissioners will be made to the county early next year where formal ceremony for the reburial of brothers and sisters massacred during the Liberian civil war in that county will take place so as to close the war chapter in the county once and for all.

During the inspections, the Chairman and delegation visited several mass graves where massacre took place in the towns of Kamattahun and Popalahun in Kolahun Disatrict, Barkadu Quadugboidi District and Lorma Passama in Zorzor District.

In those towns, some of the survivals (residents) narrated horrible and gruesome stories of the atrocities committed against them by various warring factions during the Liberian conflict, which caused some listeners to shed tears.

The Chairman and delegation interacted with the elders, chiefs, traditional leaders, women groups, Students as well as kids in Zorzor, Kolahun and Vionjama Districts where he explained in detail, the importance of the TRC process.

Meanwhile, Cllr. Verdier will continue his nationwide inspection tour of the TRC activities to Nimba, Rivercess, Sinoe and Grand Bassa Counties beginning today.
