January 19, 2010 By Roland M. Mulbah,rolandmulbah@liberiansoccer.com
It is an undeniable fact that Liberian football is in the doldrums. The Liberia Football Association (L FA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) are having an unpalatable working relationship, the national teams are in ruins and the national league is spice less when ever it is held as there are no sponsors and organizations.
There is no effective well structured program with the idea of youth football promotion where there would be a systematic sort of promotion being completely ignored.
Liberian football is certainly at a disgraceful state and we are still in a minnow status as far as contemporary football on the continent is concerned.
With the game dieing a natural death and soon to be interred in a country that has the enviable record of producing African football legend, George Oppong Manneh Weah who showcased his talent in Europe where he became FIFA world footballer of the year 1995 as well as other lucrative awards, it is quite a paradox that the country's football is soon to be forgotten if nothing concrete is done in the midst of talented players and some veteran administratosr.
There is a need to bring on board new administrators at the helm of the country's football who have the urge, desire and commitment in driving the country's game forward.
With vision and innovation probably lacking at the zenith of the country's football, several individuals have expressed their intentions to contest the coming LFA March 20, 2010 election probably to revamp the country’s football.
Yesterday, at a well attended press conference in Monrovia, Mr. Musa Hassan Bility, a well respected business man declared his long awaited intention to contest the Presidency of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) on March 20, 2010.
www.liberiansoccer.com Senior Reporter Roland M. Mulbah attended the press conference and now leafs through the details.
“Two years ago, we thought on taking the mantle of authority at the Liberia Football Association (LFA) in an attempt to develop the country’s game.
We have brought some developments at both Watanga FC as well as the LFA Executive Committee (EC).
“Those who doubted our ability to bring about change at the level of Liberian football got their answer when we led Nimba County to clinch the double (football and kickball championships) of the 2009/2010 National County sports meet.
“After consultations with our partners for a protracted period, we have finally come to Declare our intention to contest the March 20, 2010 election of the LFA,” Mr. Musa Hassan Bility, a well accomplished businessman noted in his opening statement when he Declared his intention to contest the LFA election this year.
Mr. Mility said many will wonder why he chose such a probably low profile gathering to announce his intention, but the Watanga FC boss said he believe no amount of part or grogram can better explain his intention to change football in Liberia rather than the Sports Writers Association of Liberia (SWAL) as well as other journalists.
The ardent follower of contemporary football said his intention is in the interest of the development of the game in this part of the world and not to turn things overturned.
“Our objectives are in no way gear at anybody at the LFA, the President, Madam Sombo Izetta Wesley, the Vice Presidents, Secretary Generals and Executive Committee members.
“We are not coming on board to turn thinks upside down what ever football has achieved over the years.
“We are not here to sob down those who have managed football up to this point.
“All we intend when given the opportunity is to change the direction of football from an organization that is sitting down since it formation receiving money from FIFA and other partners to manage the game to an organization that will be vibrant economically which will be gear toward making and supporting programs business minded with the rest of the world.
“This program will be completely independent of all influences in an out and straightly gear toward the administration of football in Liberia,” the LFA Presidential hopeful noted.
Mr. Bility noted that there have been differences, but the declaration of his intention is no way intended to discredit anyone in the interest of football development.
Bility, who is also President of Alpha Old-timers, one of the formidable teams as for a old timers football on the local scene is concern said he intent to bring something to football which no one has including the current leadership of the LFA.
“I want to commercialize football in Liberia which I feel no one in the current leadership is thinking on. I have a unique capacity to do that.
“I want to ask the current President of the LFA madam Wesley, the Vice Presidents, Secretary Generals, Members of the Executive Committee (EC) and stakeholders to join me in making sure that the visions of commercializing football in Liberia is materialized,” the he said.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Renaissance Communication said he wants to use the face of African football legend, King George Oppong Manneh Weah to commercialize the world popular sport, football in Liberia.
