Liberia: Muslim Students Oppose Independent Candidacy At Amezu
January 11, 2008 Morrison O.G. Sayon
A campus-based student group, the Muslim Student Organization (ZUMUSO), has strongly criticized the idea of introducing an independent candidate system at the AME Zion University.
In an exclusive interview over the weekend, the president of ZUMUSO, Mr. Mohammed D.K. Kanneh noted that the introduction of an independent candidate system is not healthy for students of the university at this time when Liberia is now under the multi-party system.
Mr. Kanneh, a former senior officer of the Liberia Seaport Police and a recent graduate of the George Weah's Global Institute of Vocational Education (GIVE) said the independent candidacy is dictatorial, autocratic and tyrannical. He said that practising the independent system would deprive students who are to be national leaders tomorrow the basic ingredients of democracy.
Mr. Kanneh then appealed to the President of the AMEZU, Rev. Mulbah Gray to reconsider his decision and do away with independent candidacy and be in support of multi-party system.
Meanwhile, the Muslim Student Organization has certificated two students who have completed a one-year sociological study at the S.K.D. Community. Students who benefited from the one-year study include, Mr. S. Mohammed Massalay and Mr. Abdullai A. Sheriff.
The one-year study according to Mr. Kannah is aimed at reducing the high rate of illiteracy in the country. The study is also geared toward enhancing the capacity of high school graduates who are unable to matriculate to higher institutions of learning due to financial burden.
Concluding, Mr. Kanneh appealed to all Muslims and non-Muslim students at the AMEZU to remain calm and law-abiding as they await the commencement of the next semester to undertake a fund-raising program.
